joey81's CNC puzzle

The sideways tilt translates to an error of 0.016 when using a half-inch wide bit. Negligible when working on wood. With aluminum, I don't know. The error will even be smaller when using a smaller diameter bit (0.005 on a 4mm bit).

But I might as well fix it since I'm going down on it anyway.

I plan to move the fix the sideways tilt my moving the existing shim from the top left linear bearing (1) to the lower left bearing (2). The nod will be addressed by inserting the 0.9mm shim into (3).

It turns out the side tilt cannot be fixed easily because there is no pivot point. When I moved the shim (0.04mm) to the bottom, the bearings are no longer linear with respect to each other, and I cannot move the carriage. I guess I'll have to leave the tilt as it is for now.

The nod shim is already installed. Will measure later.

on the side tilt Joey, make the mounting holes of the spindle base sligthly oversized... then tilt as needed since it is very minimal...

Oo nga ano? Thanks for reminding me. They are already a bit oversized for exactly for this purpose.

I only adjusted for the forward nod. After assembling the error now is:
front-back nod: 0.02 degrees
side tilt: 0.05 degrees

Went ahead and tried to engrave:

First attempt is the bottom one using a 3/8" router bit. I had no idea how big the job was.

So we changed to a 1/8" shank V-tip engraving bit and tried again (top).

No need for Mach3 (yet). Schick can still do the job :)
