painting question

Unread post #1 by chris » Wed Jul 01, 2015 10:38 pm

Hi, our family recently moved in to a rented 3-bedroom unit in QC. The unit needs/needed basic repairs. Currently, the bathroom and kitchen counter are being tiled. The interior painting had been done a couple of weeks back, except for the doors. My question is, can gloss latex paint be applied over to what seems to be enamel paint on the flush doors? My concern is the long time for enamel paint smell to dissipate. I have two small kids and it might pose as a health hazard. Thanks.

Davies' Aqua Gloss-It product line is a water-based enamel.

Costs around 1K per 4-liter container, depending on color. Yes, much more expensive than QDE, but it is odorless. And you only need water to cleanup after the job. No need for paint/lacquer thinner.

No idea if it can be applied over the existing paint.

You can apply it over existing finish but lightly sand it with 320 or higher grit.

Thanks, I will try your advice. Regarding the doors' state, they still seem in a good condition, no dents but in need of a bit of putty in some areas. Except for one door whose one side has a few "bubbles"--areas where glue came of the outer ply. I will try to inject glue in those areas, else that side would be replaced.
