Thien Baffle Build

Thien Baffle Build

Unread post #1 by joey81 » Sat Dec 16, 2017 10:13 pm

I think it will be better if I make a separate thread for this build.

No fixed design yet, but some things are certain:
- Top hat configuration
- rectangular side inlet
- bell mouth outlet
- will fit over a plastic drum with a lid diameter of around 40 cm

I've already cut the part that interfaces with the plastic drum

The dust collection hose is of course round. Diameter is 100mm.

I don't know where to source a round-to-rectangle transition, so I'll just build my own.

Drew the 3D model in Sketchup.

Fortunately there is a plugin to for unwrapping surfaces. Made the job easier for me

All I have to do now is to transfer this pattern to the sheet metal, cut the outline, and bend along the lines.

I just need to remind myself that I still have to add overlapping tabs at the edges.

no need for the transition, makes things a lot more complicated, why not just cut a round hole in the rectangular part.
Your cutting tools is only as good as your sharpening system.

Top and bottom wall holders

Test fit. 1/16" thick clear acrylic

Pillars added. Only one end is glued. The other is screwed into place, in case height changes are needed later
Image

The acrylic cracked with repeated bending.
Image

It eventually split all the way. Fortunately the split is straight enough and coincided with one of the pillars.

Needed to make some adjustments in the middle of the build. The first 3 parts were milled for a 5mm thick acrylic sheet

Finally got the chance to use this

Will serve as a mold for shaping the entrance of the vortex finder

The heat gun blows to a fixed spot while I simultaneously rotate and push down the 4-inch PVC pipe. Yes, I was standing on top of the CNC machine.

It turned out pretty well

I'd put in a 1.5" screen guard at the bellmouth, sometimes I even suck in my nitrile gloves. :D
