National Taipei University of Technology, College of Design

I would like to share my experience visiting a wood shop inside the National Taipei University of Technology from a recent trip to Taiwan.
Will post the pictures first and add captions every now and then.

The university was built during the Japanese occupation but it was developed after WW2 to primarily devote it to architecture and applied sciences including industrial design and automation.

at the entrance, Mr Hsu, the shop instructor...the shop is situated in the basement of the building...serviced by an elevator...first year college students enrol for 1 semester and taught how to operate machines and hand tools..learn traditional joinery, mostly dovetails and boxjoint...i am not sure if they are also taught how to sharpen chisels...then eventually, they are required to submit a project at the end of the semester...a few of these projects compete internationally..may it be a chair or anything with form and function...they source their wood from abroad as well...Oak and walnut from the US including Pine...of course they love to try any wood with nice grains..Image
near the entrance door, a big slab of red wood towering in one side with butterfly wedges

a poster near the entrance door

further into the shop, you can see the 12" diameter main dust collecting pipe to arborize into smaller diameter pipes

this chair with turned legs was of Scandinavian inspiration...woven seats out of some rope made of paper...but pretty strong and comfortable.

they make their own wooden handplanes including the blades...and they are made by the only living masterwoodworker we saw previously. i was told that he is spending his last days and is sick of some kind of cancer.
they dont sell or give away these planes...and for student use only.

Look at the scroll saw!
Your cutting tools is only as good as your sharpening system.
